An Interview: What If You Could Discuss With Patty Jenkins?
You've cited director Patty Jenkins as a personal role model of sorts. If you could sit down with her in real life, what is the first thing you would say?
Probably something along the lines of "Looks like I get to meet the REAL Wonder Woman here amirite? Oh god I'm so sorry."
So with that blunder in mind, what is the first question you would have for Patty Jenkins, if she agreed to continue to hear you out and not fire her agent for setting up such a meeting?
Well first, I would thank her for making Wonder Woman. Seeing girls get inspired by someone who is strong in so many ways is a beautiful thing, and I'm excited for the doors this movie will open. But next, I would like to know how she got the role directing Monster (which I immediately watched after Wonder Woman and loved). So often, we see the highlights of successful filmmaker's careers without having the blanks in between explained for those of us looking to get started. She said in an interview that she was a camera operator for years -- was this how she scored the job as director/screenwriter? Or did she create the film outline as an independent work and seek to get it financed after it's initial creation? I also saw somewhere that she worked in commercials for a few years -- did this produce the personal connections she needed to continue in the business?
And if she continued to hear you out, what next?
I would like to know what someone who wants to maintain an active, diverse lifestyle can hope to achieve in the film business. I love the other aspects of my life such as welding, but also things like travel and the family here at home. I see creating my own content as a way into the industry if I choose to pursue a blend of lifestyle, as opposed to leaving it all behind to work in LA, but I also see many ways and hear many pieces of advice as to why this won't work. I also want to continue to expose myself to diverse stories and experiences, as I would like for my future works to have a positive influence by bringing the lives of lesser-heard people to the screen and opening doors. I'd just be curious to hear what she had to say on the matter.
Lastly, do you think everyone realizes that this is you interviewing yourself in the hopes that someone will see it and deliver it to Patty?
Absolutely not, and quite frankly I'm offended you would even ask.
I'm sorry.
You can see yourself out.
